As it is one of the most famous Buddhist temples of Tokyo, so it is very crowded with locals and tourists alike.

According to legend, a statue of the Kannon was found in the Sumida river in 628 AD by two fishermen brothers. The chief of their village recognized the sanctity of the statue and enshrined it by remodeling his own house into a small temple in Asakusa so that the villagers could worship Kannon.

The first temple was founded in 645 AD, which makes it the oldest temple in Tokyo. As many others, Senso-ji was destroyed during the WW II air raids and had to be rebuilt.
